1925 DETROIT STARS (SAR) GAME USED NEGRO LEAGUE UNIFORM WithSPALDING BLACK LABEL
1925 SPALDING BLACK LABEL UNIFORM. The Detroit Stars were an American baseball team in the Negro leagues and played at historic Mack Park. There were several incarnations of the Stars; the original Stars from 19191931, Detroit Stars II the second incarnation in 1933 played at historic Hamtramck Stadium, Detroit Stars III the third version in 1937 and Detroit Stars IV the last resurrection from 19541961 when the Negro leagues were more of a minor league. Baseball teams playing in Detroit from the turn of the century were limited. All of these baseball teams played in Detroit and wore the city’s name “DETROIT” in block lettering on their jersey. The University of Michigan was established in Detroit on August 26, 1817. Their first baseball team formed in 1866 and started wearing’MICHIGAN not Detroit on their jerseys. The Detroit Tigers first minor league team affiliates was not from. Detroit but was from Texas in 1926 called The Fort Worth Panthers. Over 100 plus hours of research was given to this Highest Quality. Spalding Detroit four button pullover jersey w/no numbers on back. First, Dating this Jersey Uniform. Second, Determination on Game Use. Third, What Detroit team wore this Jersey Uniform. We dated this jersey from the web site on uniform manufacturers labels. We know that in the mid 1920’s most baseball teams went from pullover jerseys to button down jerseys. We also know that through The Baseball Hall Of Fame database on uniform history that the Chicago Cubs in 1907 were the first team to add pin striping on their jerseys. Other ball clubs including the New York Giants added pin stripes to their jerseys in 1916. Numbers first appeared in 1916 when the Cleveland Indians add numbers on their left sleeves but not until the Yankees in 1929 who added numbers on the back of their jerseys did other major league teams follow. We then started to list all the Detroit teams that played in the mid 1920’s and to our surprise, very few white professional baseball teams played in Detroit other then the Tigers. The majority were black professional and minor league baseball teams. The Tigers only had one minor league farm team who played in Texas and not in Detroit. The University of Michigan which was founded in Detroit wore the word “MICHIGAN” not Detroit on their jerseys. FINAL NOTES ON RESEARCH. With limited photographs taken of the Negro League teams and of all black teams from the turn of the century to the mid 1930’s, our research in finding a photograph of the team wearing this exact jersey in impossible. The lack of photographs available to determine which teams wore these jerseys makes it just about impossible to determine teams ownership. A good researcher has to work with what they have and thats what we have done here. This research was quite easy compared to others we have completed. Others vintage jerseys with just one or two letters and with no manufactures labels always are inclusive in determining team ownership. This Spalding “DETROIT” jersey has everything one needs in researching team/league ownership without photographs. First, Definitely not a Detroit Tigers Jersey uniform. Definitely not a University of Michigan baseball jersey uniform. But definitely is one of the many black baseball teams playing baseball in Detroit in the 1920’s. This conclusion is based on all the research listed above including the block Detroit lettering on all black baseball teams. This jersey is quite Rare and Unusual due to the sub lettering <"S a r">. When we first looked at <"S a r">, we recognized this large “S” worn also by the Chicago White Sox. When we looked again, it looked like the word “STAR” with a <"T"> missing. When we looked again at the Black Spalding Label inside the jersey and matching pants and the details on it’s history,, We can now say 100% with no doubts that. We have an original Spalding Jersey worn by a Black baseball team playing in DETROIT. WHY ARE WE 100% SURE THIS JERSEY UNIFORM WAS WORN BY A BLACK BASEBALL TEAM IN 1925? SPALDING LITTLE KNOWN BLACK SECRET IS WHY WE ARE 100% POSITIVE! PHOTO #11 AND #12 ABOVE – 100% PHOTO PROOF POSITIVE. SPALDING MANUFACTURED THE BLACK LABEL AT THE SAME TIME THE ORGANIZED NEGRO LEAGUES STARTED TO FORM, ca: 1925 AND DISCONTINUED PRODUCING THESE BLACK LABELS AT THE SAME TIME THE ORGANIZED NEGRO LEAGUES BEGAN TO FOLD, ca; 1942. MADE FOR BLACK TEAMS UNIFORMS ONLY. Our research on the Black Spalding label jersey first began for us in 1978 at one of the first major sports card shows at Hofstra University on Long Island New York. I will never forget that day because the great Mickey Mantle was there greeting his fans with a hand shake. Mantle appearance was organized by Tom Catal longtime friend and signing agent of the Mick. There were thousands of baseball cards, football cards, basketball cards on display. There were uniforms game worn by the New York Yankees, The New York Mets and other major leagues teams as well. Minor league teams uniforms and Negro League uniforms. Just about anything and everything for the collectors were on display. HOFSTRA SOPRTS CARD SHOW IS THE LONGEST SPORTS CARD SHOW STILL RUNNING TODAY. Amazed at the amount of baseball cards on display, I was blown away to see professional game used uniforms. I spent my time looking and feeling these jerseys as I have never up to this point seen them in person. I got an education that day and from that time on became a uniform collector and dealer. Not only did I learn that Spalding was not the only makers of professional baseball jerseys but there were other makers like Rawlings and Wilson who also manufactured baseball jerseys worn in MLB games. What I was told when questing this one dealer on the different color Spalding labels on the jerseys he had on display was shocking. This one dealer who was from the Chicago area and who had many MLB Team Jerseys on display along with several Minor League, Negro League and Negro Minor League baseball team jerseys. He explained to me why Spalding manufactured Yankees pin stripe home jerseys and Wilson manufactured Yankees away road jerseys. Why the Brooklyn Dodgers and the St. Louis Cardinals jerseys were manufactured by Rawlings. I was most interested in Spalding uniforms because. I Believed Spalding Manufactured Everything Sports Related Up Till Then. This Dealer then showed me this Jersey worn by a Black Team in Chicago. THE SPALDING LABEL WAS ALL BLACK. I Question him Why Spalding produced a Black label when most of his other. Spalding uniforms he displayed from The Majors and Minor League were White? I was told by this Dealer that Spalding produced the BLACK LABELS around the same time (1925) Organized Negro Leagues Baseball Teams were forming. When White Baseball Team owners found out that Spalding began manufacturing Black Teams Uniforms, most White Team owners threatened to stop Spalding from manufacturing their uniforms. For this reason alone, Spalding produced “BLACK” labels for the Black Teams Uniforms and keep the White labels for the all White Baseball Teams Uniforms. He also told me that when Spalding’s little secret became publicly known, they then and only then, began adding Black Labels on all major league baseball teams uniforms including the 1939 American League/National League 1st All Star Game. This was shocking information to learn. I asked him how did he know this and he told me that his. Grandfather worked in the SPALDING plant in Chicago. Our Conclusion from the Detailed Research above is Proof enough for us to Guarantee that, This. Jersey Uniform was Worn by a Black Baseball Teams playing in DETROIT in the mid 1920’s. Was this jersey uniform worn by the Negro League, Detroit Stars? Was this Team Jersey Uniform worn by another Detroit Stars Team? Was this Team Jersey Uniform worn by a Minor League Detroit Stars Team? Was this Team Jersey Uniform worn by another of the many undocumented. Black Baseball Teams playing in Detroit in the 1920’s? Yes to All of the Above! FINAL CONCLUSION ON RESEARCH. WE HAVE AN AUTHENTIC DETROIT BLACK TEAM JERSEY UNIFORM MANUFACTURED BY SPALDING WITH A BLACK LABEL. ALL THE DETAILED RESEARCH ABOVE LEAVES NO DOUBT ON IT’S AUTHENTICITY. THE LACK OF WHITE TEAMS PLAYING IN DETROIT IN THE 1920’S AND TO THE MANY BLACK TEAMS PLAYING IN DETROIT DURING THE SAME TIME PERIOD AND THE INFAMOUS BLACK SPALDING LABEL ALONG WITH THE “S – AR” LETTERING MISSING THE “T” TO COMPLETE THE WORD STAR WHICH REPRESENTS THE FULLY DOCUMENTED “DETROIT STARS” IS ALL THE PROOF WE NEED AND ANY COLLECTOR WOULD NEED TO AGREE WITH US ON IT’S AUTHENTICITY.
