JACK CLARK St. Louis Cardinals Game Used Autod Jersey
Offered here is a game worn St. Louis Cardinals jersey from All-Star outfielder Jack The Ripper Clark, one of the most feared hitters of the 1980s. Its from the 1986 season, by Rawlings, size 44, showing very good use. All numbers and letters are sewn on. Clark has signed the jersey on the back above his name, although the signature is somewhat faded. Attached to the Rawlings label is the flyer tag showing that it is from Set 1, 1986. Clark joined the Giants in 1975, and spent 9 seasons by the bay. He immediately established himself as a fierce hitter, and those who saw him, myself included, will tell you that there simply wasnt any way to get a fastball by him. He played on some talent-free teams, and had to go through long periods where he was the majority of the teams offense, but he did a creditable job of carrying the team for long stretches. Although he didnt hit for a particularly high average, he was consistent, and in 1978 he had a 26-game the longest by any Giant since 1900. He was highly regarded, and won the Willie Mac award for spirit and leadership. It was a romance that would not last, however, as Clark didnt always get along with manager Frank Robinson, And other players sometimes felt that he took longer to recover from injuries than was necessary. He was also known to complain bitterly about the conditions in Candlestick Park. He was right about that; they were miserable. In 1985 Clark was traded to St. Louis, where the Cardinals immediately moved him to first base, which had the dual benefit of making him less vulnerable to injury, and of removing him from the outfield, where he was a liability. T he rewards were immediate. In that years NLCS, Clarks 3-run homer in Game 6 clinched the pennant against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The following season saw more bad blood, this time between Clark and shortstop Ozzie Smith, but that didnt deter him from having his best year, batting. 285 with 36 homers and 106 RBI despite missing 36 games. His next stop was New York for a two-year stint with the Yankees, where he served mostly as a Designated Hitter. He enjoyed playing for Billy Martin but was less than thrilled with Martins successor, Lou Piniella; in San Diego, his next stop, he feuded with Tony Gwynn, who was universally loved, and on his way out of town he blasted his manager, Greg Riddoch. After brief stints with Boston and Montreal, he was done as a player, and his extravagant spending habits led him to bankruptcy. He became a broadcaster on a sports talk show, and almost immediately accused Albert Pujols of using PEDs, and unsupported allegation that he was forced to withdraw. Once again, his proclivity for picking fights with opponents out of his weight class ended badly, and his radio career came to an end. Although he may have been an argumentative sort, theres no denying that he was a terrific hitter, and in addition to his 4 all-star selections, he earned a pair ofSilver sluggers and a place on the Giants Walk of Fame.
