1976 Chicago White Sox Shorts Game Used & Ticket Stub From Debut Game 8/8/76
THIS IS FOR (BOTH) SHORTS & TICKET. KEVIN BELL GAME USED “SHORTS” FROM 1976 CHICAGO WHITE SOX SHORTS GAMES & TICKET STUB FROM DEBUT OF THE “SHORTS” AUGUST 8, 1976. N the United States, 1976 marked the bicentennial. In the world of the White Sox, it marked the return of maverick owner Bill Veeck, who had previously served as Sox owner from 1959-61. In 1951 with the St. Louis Browns, Veeck signed 3-foot-7 Chicago native Eddie Gaedel, who managed to appear in a Major League game. Ten years later, Veeck introduced an exploding scoreboard which roared and lit up the sky after White Sox home runs. His latest stunt in March 1976 might be the one that people remember the most. On Tuesday, March 9, Veeck unveiled the new White Sox uniforms. A long pullover top with a faux collar and early 20th century lettering turned heads. But what stole the show were the shorts. It wasn’t the first time a baseball team wore shorts; the Hollywood Stars of the Pacific Coast League wore them for a few seasons in the early 1950s. But nobody had ever tried it in the major leagues, and Chicago isn’t Hollywood. Veeck deflected criticism of the shorts. They are not garish. Like my wife Mary Frances said, they have understated elegance. ” When asked how the heftier Sox players might feel with their knees exposed, Veeck added, “Players should not worry about their vanity, but their comfort. If it’s 95 degrees out, an athlete should be glad to put on short pants and forget his bony knees. Hell, I’ve got a worse looking knee than any of my players. So if you ever wondered why the 1976 White Sox wore shorts? Veeck would most likely answer, Why not? Some of the player reactions to the shorts were priceless. Bart Johnson: They don’t have to get a pair for me. I’ll just use Jack Brohamer’s regular pants and they’ll look like shorts. Jack Brohamer: I don’t think what Bart said is very funny. I’m not going to wear short pants unless they let me wear a halter top, too. Lamar Johnson: I got the nicest thighs you ever saw. White Sox organist Nancy Faust had one word for the fresh outfits: Sexy. The White Sox ended up wearing the shorts in three games, winning two of the three. Looking at it from a record standpoint, in 1976 they went 2-1 in shorts and 62-96 in regular baseball pants. The shorts debuted on Aug. 8 in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Royals at Comiskey Park. Terry Forster, listed at 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds (though that’s a very low estimate) took the mound and pitched six scoreless innings. The first White Sox batter in shorts was Jerry Hairston, who promptly singled and stole second base. The biggest concern with the shorts was the potential disaster from sliding, yet the Sox tied their season high with five stolen bases – in five attempts – in this game. Perhaps it was the element of surprise; maybe the catchers were laughing too hard. Regardless, when the dust settled, the White Sox collected seven hits – all singles – and won the game 5-2. They switched back to regular pants for Game 2 of the doubleheader and lost 7-1. The second “shorts game” was on Aug. 21, a 12-inning, 11-10 slugfest against the Orioles at Comiskey Park. The White Sox were 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts, and perhaps most notably Brohamer became the first, and only, major league player ever to homer while wearing shorts. Finally, the next day, in Game 1 of a doubleheader, the White Sox took the field wearing shorts for the third and final time. They lost 6-2 to the Orioles, but it’s hard to blame the shorts, as it took the eventual 1976 American League Cy Young Award winner – Hall of Famer Jim Palmer – to beat the shorts-clad South Siders. Sadly (or not), the White Sox never wore the shorts again, but it should be noted not only that they went 2-1 wearing them, but that they scored six runs per game and were a perfect 8-for-8 in stolen base attempts. Bill Veeck dared to be different, and while some criticized his eccentricities, he never failed to make the game fun – even if Wilbur Wood’s bare legs aren’t exactly your idea of fun. Cal Ripken Jr. 1981 Rookie MLB Debut Signed Game Used Jersey Mears 10 Ripken LOA
This is the jersey that started Cal Ripken, Jr. On the road to Cooperstown. You could say that baseball is in the Ripken familys DNA. Followed his brother Oliver from the sandlots to the semi-pro ranks, then went on to a long career in the Orioles farm system. Was managing in the minors when he and wife Vi had their first born, named Cal after his father. At the age of three he knew he wanted to be a ballplayer and by fifth grade, Junior knew the game as well as an adult. In high school he was already ensconced at his customary shortstop position, though he could also be counted on to pitch. As a senior, Cal struck out 17 as he pitched Aberdeen High to the Maryland State Championship. It was only natural that his Dads employer would be interested in this young phenom, and the Orioles drafted him in the second round of the 1978 draft. His first season in pro ball saw Cal struggling a bit, but his sophomore year showed what could be expected from him; a. 303 average, league-leading 28 doubles, and most prophetically, appearing in every single one of the Miami Orioles games. His performance earned him a late season call up to the Os AA team in Charlotte where he hit three home runs in 17 games. Playing all of 1980 with Charlotte, Ripken set the teams single season home run record and led the team to the Southern League Championship. 1981 found Cal Jr. With Rochester, Baltimores top farm club. Facing AAA pitching, Cal hit. 288 and was named the International Leagues Rookie of the Year. It was only natural that he got the call to the big club. Cal reported to the Orioles in the first week of August 1981. As a late season call up, the clubhouse manager issued Cal with one of the teams jerseys from the previous season. It was at this time that he was given the number 8 that became synonymous with him for the rest of his career. According to Cal in his book, The Only Way I Know, Some guys are particular about their number, but I didn’t care. I was just happy to have any major league uniform with any number. In the minors I’d worn 16, 7, 12, and 5, respectively. If I’d thought about it, which I didn’t, I might have preferred 7 with Baltimore, because that was Dad’s number throughout his years managing in the minors. Wearing this jersey, Cal made his Major League debut on August 10, 1981 against Kansas City. Earl Weaver put the rookie in as a pinch runner in the 12th inning and he promptly scored the winning run on a John Lowenstein single. Weaver used him as a pinch runner again two days later in the first game of a doubleheader. In the second game Cal went hitless in two at bats but recorded his first big league hit on August 16 against the White Sox. In his short stint with the Os in 1981, Cal demonstrated through his fielding, bat and drive that he was indeed Big League material. Hed make the Orioles roster out of spring training the next year and starting May 30, 1982 would play in every single Orioles game for the next 16 years. This home white jersey has Orioles across the chest in orange and black tackle twill script above his immortal number 8 in the same colors. The collar and sleeve openings are ringed in orange, black and white ribbing. A red size 42 Rawlings label is sewn inside the right front tail along with a SET 1 1980 hang tag. The back has RIPKEN across the shoulders in orange and black tackle twill letters on a matching white nameplate. His number 8 is below in orange and black tackle twill. As befits the jersey of a rookie trying to prove himself, there are several stains and scuffs found throughout, most noticeably a stray mark beside the R in RIPKEN on the nameplate. The tackle twill shows puckering from laundering and light fading from age. The six buttons are intact and appear to be original to the jersey. A tremendous piece of the Ripken story, an historical artifact that was worn by one of baseballs greatest heroes as he began the career that would see him breaking one of sports most untouchable records. Ripken signed the jersey and inscribed “My MLB Debut Game Used Jersey August 10, 1981″. This jersey comes with a signed LOA from Cal Ripken, Jr. For the game use and a LOA from MEARS (317397) for the game use, who have graded this jersey its highest grade of A10. Full letter JSA COA for the autograph and inscriptions. Welcome to Showpieces Sports. We offer the finest in Sports Memorabilia and autographs.
