This is a 1972 Rawlings Sandy Alomar game worn jersey. It was restored to its current beauty. This one had most all of the team lettering removed, and only the under-layer of blue was left in “ALOMAR” on the back. The sleeve patch is original and has never been removed. The lettering was all matched perfectly to the original Angel specs using what was left as a template. The stitching is perfect and each has been fussed over. This is an EXTREMELY rare/uncommon/scarce jersey that was ONLY USED FOR ONE YEAR. The small “a” was only used two years 71-72. In 1971 the jerseys were flannel; in 1972 they made their switch to polyester. I have only ever held one other example in my entire life, and I’ve been around a while! – This thing is gorgeous!!! The piece is solid and in very good condition. I would not wear it due to its historic nature and value, but it is solid enough to be worn. My Collecting History: – I was once well-known in the jersey collection circles dating back to the early 1990s. I ran a jersey restoration business. I fell into this business because back in the day when I couldnt afford the higher-end items, I had to take a different path if I was going to be able to collect these wonderful pieces of history, so I started searching the junker bins, and learning how to restore. At the time, there wasnt the huge marketing machine that there is now. Most of the time it is for charity, but sometimes not. I found many really cool jerseys in the junker bins and they were all in various stages of disrepair. Missing patches, missing lettering (all or only a few), busted seems, so forth and so on. In the process of recycling they would remove names and numbers. They would sometimes even remove whole team names if they were recycled to the minors as the minor league team had, on many occasions, the same color pattern as the parent team. The thing about these jerseys though, is that when lettering/numbering is removed, one can clearly discern the outline of the original stitching. Which gave me a lot of information that I needed to restore. Many teams also embroider the original users name, size, and number on the tail. It was fun to research! On several occasions I was able to correct bad information at Baseball Almanac regarding a players number when I had that particular players jersey right in front of me. I have found some real gems worn by some stars over the years. At one collectibles show, I met a former employee from R. Liebe and we struck up a friendship. If you what/who R. J Liebe is, then you are a true collector!! She was an accomplished uniform designer and she helped with my restorations and the cottage business was born. We worked to restore many jerseys EXACTLY as they were in their glory. We used all the correct period materials save the new thread. If we needed a specific patch we would track down an authentic patch from a period jersey that was otherwise useless. At that point I owned in the range of 300-400 jerseys. It is time another collector and/or Angels fan can enjoy these. These will mostly be Angels Jerseys. That is who I grew up watching!! – Some of the highlights will be. 1980 Brian Downing (#9 year he broke his foot). 1972 Sandy Alomar (little a second year) VERY SCARE/RARE!! At 50 I have only ever seen two examples of the 1972 jersey in my entire life. 1969 Ken Tatum (rookie, with centennial patch). 1971 Jim Fregosi (custom made, one-of-a-kind replica, little a first year, got the idea to make this while restoring the Alomar jersey). 1966 #6 Angels Jersey Unused, BRAND NEW, never worn by anybody, the most gorgeous thing EVER!!!!! My most cherished jersey. Plus about 20-30 other Authentic milestone Angels (and a few other teams), non game-used, jerseys covering the last 45 years.
