He was around Fenway park in late September 1983 but did not appear in any games. In 1984 he started the season wearing 1983 tagged jerseys. Why would this occur and how could it be proved? First, Mike Torrez, who had worn number 21 in the late 70s through 1982, went to the Yankees in 1983 and no one wore number 21 for the Red Sox in 1983. The number 21 jerseys made in 1983 were Clemens size 44, and not being worn, and being in usable condition , were issued to Clemen s in the spring of 1984. This jersey has all the requisite technical specs, including the uniquely spaced BOS TON Front and full block number 21 on the back. The proper Wilson 44 label adorns the left tail above the chain link 83 swatch. The 2 1/4 inch cotton collar and button path lining is soft to the touch and is a creamy off-white hue. The 83 green tag may prevent the jersey from being referred to as rookie perfection , but its close and was used in 1984 by the young Rocket.
