Offered for your consideration is a beautiful and vintage game worn/used Jerry Hairston 1975 Chicago White Sox powder blue #2 road jersey. This jersey displays a cursive Hairston chain stitched swatch tag in the collar while residing on the jerseys tail is a Wilson manufactures size 42 tag and associated White Sox 75 set 2 swatch tag. 1975 would mark the last year this jersey style was worn and it featured enlarged red/white piping at the sleeves and collar. Nellie Fox died of cancer on December 1st 1975 at the age of 47 and on May 1st 1976 Fox’s #2 was officially retired by the White Sox in honor of their future HOF 2nd baseman. The White Sox didn’t issue the #2 in 1976 so it appears that this jersey is the last White Sox road jersey in the past 43-years to display Fox’s retired #2. Hairston split time between the majors and minors in 1975 starting the season in the majors wearing #2 and then being sent down to the minors early May before his early July call up. Hairston would switch to wearing #22 at some point in the summer after the White Sox traded outfielder Buddy Bradford #22 to the Cardinals on June 30. In September the White Sox would first issue jersey #2 to rookie call up Mike Squires who wore the red pinstripe version during a 7-game home stand from September 1st thru 7th as evidenced by the attached White Sox Program scorecard from the Minnesota series played on September 5th, 6th and 7th the second was newly acquired from the Oakland A’s and future White Sox star Chet Lemon who at age 20 received his rookie September call up and wore jersey #2 from September 9th till the end of the season making 23 plate appearances in 5 road games from September 22 thru 28. It is also my belief that the two listing pictures are of Lemon wearing this very same road jersey as evidenced by the extensive backing material puckering from washings displayed along both sides of Lemon’s pulldown zipper line from the Chicago script identifer to his waist band. Unfortunately the images aren’t high definition so I can only define it 100% as a style match but regardless of what jersey Lemon is seen wearing the pictures clearly show that the jersey wasn’t new issue due to the extensive backing material puckering further supporting the theory that the jersey Lemon is seen wearing was recycled stock. Jersey is in 100% original working order, displaying nice even use with loose threads, soft/puckered identifiers, interior pine tar staining and without any of the heavy beat to death recycled minor league abuse as this was the last year this jersey style was used in making way for the teams new ownership in 1976 and Bill Veeck’s inspired disco softball jerseys that appeared that year. Rivera has worn the number 42 his entire career, and will be the last man in baseball to wear it. The number was retired throughout the major leagues in honor of Jackie Robinson on April 15, 1997, the 50th anniversary of Robinsons major league debut. That night, Rivera blew what would have been his ninth major league save. Rivera was one of 14 active players who were wearing the number at the time and were thus allowed to keep it for the remainder of their careers. The last player to wear 42 other than Rivera was Mo Vaughn, who retired after the 2003 season. NEW YORK (AP) — Jose Guillen. Sauntered over to his locker after his postgame shower Monday and waved a towel up and down in front of him, eagerly soaking in the cool air of the clubhouse. Tough to cool down after this series. Guillen finished off a terrific stretch against the. In style, hitting a tiebreaking solo home run off. In the ninth inning to lift the. To a 3-2 win. That’s a tough one. That’s the last guy I want to face coming into the ninth inning, Guillen said. I was hoping it was somebody else. I was just kind of realizing he’s going to come with that cutter and I guessed pretty good right there. Guillen went deep on an 0-2 pitch from Rivera (2-2), pumping his right arm as he watched the ball sail over the fence while rounding first base. Rivera turned around and shouted several times after the drive — a rare show of emotion for the longtime closer. “You make your pitches, you are able to get him out, ” said Rivera, who also surrendered a tiebreaking homer to. I didn’t make my pitches. It was Guillen’s 11th homer of the season and fourth in the past three games. He went 9-for-16 in the four-game series with four homers and 10 RBIs and also scored six runs to help the Royals gain a split. The mercurial outfielder even threw out two runners in Saturday’s 12-11 loss to New York. “That’s as good a series as I’ve seen a player have, especially in the setting that it happened, ” Royals manager Trey Hillman said. He’s worked hard to get where he is. The Yankees loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, and. Hit a trickler up the line. Quickly scooped the ball and neatly tossed to reliever. Covering the bag for the final out. “Melky is a fast runner, ” Soria said. I just tried to run as fast as I can. To ground out with runners on first and second to end the eighth and earn his first major league win. Soria got his 14th save. In his previous appearance, he blew his first save opportunity of the season against New York on Saturday. “We had a shot again, ” Yankees manager. Kansas City got a nice effort from. And won for only the fourth time in 21 games. The Royals also improved to 5-29 at Yankee Stadium since the start of the 2000 season. He is 8-1 with a 3.11 ERA in his past 10 starts. “I haven’t been eight innings for a long time but it felt pretty good today, ” Mussina said. Mussina was working on a three-hit shutout when Guillen doubled with one out in the seventh. Hit the next pitch over the wall in left for his eighth homer of the season. Kansas City put runners on second and third later in the inning but Mussina retired. On a grounder to third for the final out. New York bounced back quickly. Abreu led off the bottom half with a double and. Followed with a long drive to left to chase Hochevar and tie it at 2. It was Rodriguez’s 10th homer of the season. Hochevar, the top overall selection in the 2006 draft, retired 14 straight after leadoff hitter. Beat out a grounder for an infield single in the first. “That was all that I was concerned with was executing one pitch at a time, ” said Hochevar, who struck out four and allowed four hits in his first career appearance at Yankee Stadium. The gametime temperature was 94 degrees, and the crowd of 53,633 used fans, towels and umbrellas to stay cool.
