1960 Pittsburgh Pirates Hal Smith Game-worn World Series Uniform (Jersey, Pants)
1960 Hal Smith Pittsburgh Pirates World Series Uniform Includes both the jersey and pants worn in World Series game 3. This uniform was obtained directly from Hal Smith during a visit to his home in Texas in the 1990s. Hal was kind enough to host long-time show promoter and legendary hobbyist, Larry Dluhy, as well as myself, while he regaled us with fantastic baseball stories. Smith had been beleaguered playing for losing teams earlier in his career (Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Athletics A’s from 1955 to 1959) so it was in spring training in 1960 when he formally asked Roberto Clemente to lead him and his new teammates to a World Series Championship. Clemente responded by saying I do it for you, Smitty. True to his word, Clemente put together his first All-Star season and led the Pittsburgh Pirates throughout the regular and post-season, culminating in one of the most exciting Fall Classics in baseball history. The pants and jersey were game worn exclusively by Hal Smith in Game 3 of the World Series, played in the Bronx at Yankee Stadium. According to Hal, the Galbraith family provided each Pittsburgh Pirates’ player two sets of World Series “special” uniforms. Though largely overshadowed by Bill Mazeroski’s famous walk-off World Series winning home run in the bottom of the 9th inning in game 7, Hal Smith hit a critically important 3-run home run in bottom of the 8th which set the stage for Maz’s heroics. While it would certainly be nice to have owned Hal Smith’s game 7 jersey, all of the home uniforms were collected by the Galbraiths immediately after game 7. The Pittsburgh Pirates’ players were allowed to keep their World Series road uniforms and this is the one and only that was worn by Hal Smith. The jersey is complete with all of the original tagging, buttons, lettering/numbering, and detailing (see images). It shows good game use throughout with staining on both the jersey and pants. Jersey Detail – “Pirates”. Jersey Detail – “sleeve”. Jersey Detail – collar. Jersey Detail – “Set 1 – 1960″. Hal Smith – 1960 Topps card.
