Giants President and Managing General Partner Peter Magowan announced today that the San Francisco Giants will dedicate a statue in honor of Juan Marichal and retire Gaylord Perry’s number during the 2005 season. “Our 122-year old franchise is steeped in tradition and we have worked to celebrate our rich history in and around SBC Park, ” said Magowan. It is only fitting that we would pay tribute to two former Giants pitching legends – Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry – and to permanently recognize them for their many contributions to this organization. Juan Marichal Statue Dedication – Saturday, May 21. On Sunday, May 21, the Giants will dedicate a nine-foot bronze statue of Giants Hall of Fame pitcher Juan Marichal at SBC Park’s Lefty O’Doul Plaza. The statue will feature Marichal’s famous high-leg kick and will pay tribute to his outstanding 16-year career. “It is an extreme honor to have the Giants organization and Peter Magowan recognize me as the second Latin American baseball player in the Major Leagues to have a statue dedicated, ” said Marichal. Roberto Clemente became the first to be bestowed such an honor by the Pittsburgh Pirates after an 18 – year career that tragically ended with his death. Juan Antonio Marichal Sanchez, the high kicking right hander from the Dominican Republic, played for the San Francisco Giants from 1960 to 1973. Throughout his 16-year playing career, the “Dominican Dandy” fashioned a 243-142 lifetime ledger and was a 20-game winner on six occasions. He cemented his place in Giants’ lore over three-week span in 1963, when he first tossed the 14th no hitter in franchise history on June 15, 1963, a 1-0 gem versus the Houston Astros. Then, in one of the greatest pitching duels in the history of Major League Baseball, he beat Warren Spahn and the Braves 1-0 in 16 innings on July 2. Marichal twice led the National League in complete games and shutouts, while winning the senior circuit ERA title in 1969 with a 2.10 mark. From 1963 to 1969, he was the winningest pitcher in the big leagues, going 154-65 for an amazing. He completed a total of 244 games out of 457 starts during his career, striking out 2,303 and finishing his career with a 2.89 ERA. Marichal was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983. Commissioned to well-known American sculptor William Behrends, the Marichal statue is the latest installation in a series of statues at SBC Park that honor Giants Hall of Famers, including Willie Mays and Willie McCovey. The Marichal sculpture has been developed over an 18-month period. The process included conducting extensive interviews and research of Marichal and creating two to three smaller clay model versions of the statue before the final sculpture was completed. Once the final statue will be transported to a foundry in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where the statue is cast in bronze using the Lost Wax procedure. Retirement of Gaylord Perry’s Number 36 – Saturday, July 23. On Saturday, July 23 during a pre-game ceremony, the Giants will retire number 36 — which was worn by Hall of Fame pitcher Gaylord Perry while he pitched for the Giants from 1963 to 1971. The Giants will also give away Gaylord Perry bobbleheads to the first 20,000 fans on that day. “I was honored when Peter Magowan first called to tell me that the Giants organization was going to retire my number this year, ” said Perry. All I could think about was the group of players I had played with who also have had their numbers retired. There is Willie Mays, the greatest ballplayer ever, who was always out in centerfield. Willie McCovey, one of the most feared left handed hitters over at first base. Orlando Cepeda, the Baby Bull, one of the great opposite field hitters who also hit with power. Perry, who was the only pitcher to win a Cy Young Award in both the National and American Leagues until 1999, posted a 134-109 record with a 2.96 ERA for San Francisco from 1962-71. Originally signed by the Giants in 1958, he stuck with the big club in 1963 and became a recognized star by 1966, when he finished 21-8. On September 17, 1968, he pitched a no-hitter against the Cardinals. In 1970, the All-Star led the NL in victories with a 23-13 mark. Perry was traded to Cleveland in 1972 and he led the AL in wins that year, going 24-16 with a 1.92 ERA for the Indians en route to the AL Cy Young Award. Perry was traded to Texas in 1975 and then was traded back to the NL in the middle of the 1977 campaign when he was sent to San Diego. He won his second Cy Young award in 1978, when he went 21-6 for San Diego and led the National League in winning percentage. Elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991, the Williamston, North Carolina native posted a 314-265 lifetime record with 3,534 strikeouts over 22 seasons.
