The White Soxwore this style of jersey for one year only in 1991. Rare pullover jersey of Barry Bonds from the 1990 season. I acquired this jersey directly from the White Sox after it was sent to their minor league facility in Sarasota and before it was stripped for use in the minor leagues. I was the batting practice pitcher for the White Sox class A affiliate in the SAL and through my relationships was able to acquire this jersey before it was stripped and relettered for minor league use. The White Sox were notorious for being frugal and reused everything they could until it turned to dust including jerseys, pants, helmets, jackets, bags, etc, etc. If it could be reused and repurposed at some level in the organization it was. And this jersey was not going to be an exception regardless of who it once belonged to. Although it sat in their minor league facility for several years it was destined for use at some point by a minor league player eventually. There was 1 set each of home and road jerseys that were tagged “84” instead of the usual “84 1″. Additionally this particular set did not include the Phillies patch on the left sleeve that began in 1984. Most likely these sets were from the very beginning of the season, which is why they appear on baseball cards. The image of Carlton on the Sport Royalty card (2008 Upper Deck Goudey release) is definitely from the later part of Carlton’s Phillies career (by the aging of his face). There is no patch on the left sleeve and the numbers and Phillies logo match up perfectly to the striping! Look closely and you’ll also see a white zipper. Many of the sets from that era had brass zippers. The Topps card was issued in 1985. It also has a white zipper and the numbers and logo perfectly match the striping. Overall, the jersey shows nice, even wear and has some very light staining on the upper right chest and arm and collar. There are also some minor stains on the front and back. The nameplate, logos, and numbers are all original and unaltered. It is autographed on the chest and says “Date: Steve Carlton 7/29/89″, which is the date that Carlton was honored by the Phillies and had his #32 retired. This jersey was possibly intended for use during 1983 season because it has 100th anniversary centennial Phillies patch sewn on the right sleeve and this was year they wore that patch on their jerseys in the 1983 season even though jersey is tagged for the 84 season. From what I understand the Phillies did possibly issue out the 84 jerseys to the players in the 83 season with the 83 patch sewn on sleeve for them to wear in playoffs because their 83 jerseys were so beat up from the regular season wear and tear that the organization wanted them to have new jerseys for the post season but it’s not 100% for sure that they did this or not. The jersey is all original and unaltered and shows light game use has the correct proper tagging on the jersey and it’s tagged 84 set 2 has his name “Carlton” sewn on inside the collar of the jersey. It is also autographed by Carlton on the back of the jersey on the #2 in sliver paint pen marker. The name “Carlton” is sewn on nameplate on the back jersey arched at the top along with the #32 sewn on back of jersey. This jersey is absolutely gorgeous!! The jersey also comes with 80’s style game worn Steve Carlton spring training BP cap shows very nice use dirt and sweat stains also has #32 written under brim of the cap in black marker.
